Rwandan coffee notes successes on US market

afrol News, 10 April - After having been introduced to the US market a short time ago through a development aid programme, Rwandan coffee rapidly has become a sales success in the largest American coffee chain, Starbucks.

The US Agency for International Development (USAID), Starbucks Corporation, and the Embassy of Rwanda are now to host an event to honour their "partnership with the people of Rwanda" for the success of their specialty coffee Rwanda Blue Bourbon, USAID said in a press statement today.

In mid-March, sales of the coffee entered 5,000 Starbucks outlets around the United States and have since "experienced extraordinary success," the statement said. Rwanda coffee has become the 10th Black Apron Exclusive coffee sold by the Seattle-based Starbucks. "Black Apron Exclusive" is a category Starbucks reserves for superior quality coffees.

The event to honour the success story is to be held at the Rwandan Embassy in Washington tomorrow. Ambassador of Rwanda Zac Nsenga, USAID Assistant Administrator for the Economic Growth, Agriculture and Trade Jackee Schafer, and Starbucks Green Coffee Trader Alfredo Nuno are to speak at the event.
