Ghana: Norway offers technical expertise for oil exploration

afrol News, 10 August - The Norwegian ambassador to Ghana, Tore Nedrebø, has expressed his country’s readiness to provide technical expertise to Ghana so as to boost oil exploration in its western region.

The discovery of oil in Ghana has attracted the interest of so many countries. China, Germany, Austria, Norway and Vietnam have expressed their resolve to develop the country’s energy sector.

Ambassador Nedrebø made the assurances as he presented his letters of credentials to the Ghanaian President, John Agyekum Kufuor, in Accra on Wednesday. Mr Nedrebø represents his country in Nigeria as well.

Ghana’s Minister for Information, Kwamena Bartels, said the West African country did not want to join a league of failing African oil producing nations. In a nutshell, Ghanaian officials want to turn oil into blessing for all their citizens.

Ghanaian authorities had earlier set up six teams to study the experiences and challenges oil producing countries are faced with.

President Kufuor has accepted the diplomat’s invitation to deliver a keynote speech on the success of Africa at a Norway conference in October. Mr Kufuor promise to grab the opportunity to foster diplomatic ties between the two countries

International oil firms last June said they discovered huge oil deposits [one of the biggest deposits in Africa] in the western part of the Ghana.

Tullow Oil discovered 600 million barrels of light oil offshore from Ghana.

\"Based on evidence to date, ultimate reserves are likely to be materially in excess of previous estimates, with some high potential zones still to be drilled,\" Tullow Chief Executive Officer, Aidan Heavy, said, warning that it might take seven years before Ghana enjoys oil flow.

The flow of oil in Ghana will stop the country from spending over US $200 million on oil importation annually.

President Kufuor said in the absence of oil his country’s economy has been doing.

He was confident that oil would grease the wheels of Ghana’s economy because oil generates money.
