Missing peacekeeper found dead

afrol News, 6 March - The remains of a missing French soldier with the European Union peacekeeping mission in Chad and the Central African Republic have been found in Sudan.

The French soldier went missing after a clash ensued between Sudanese forces and the EU peacekeepers on Monday along the three border zone.

On Tuesday, both the EU and France sent formal apologies to the government of Sudan over the border clash, which resulted after EUFOR vehicle "inadvertently" crossed the Sudanese border.

Sudanese authorities blamed the peacekeepers of first opening fire at government soldiers, but were forced to retreat after they were fired back.

They claimed that three peacekeeping vehicles and a helicopter later returned for a second exchange of fire.

Four nomads were killed who attemptd to retrieve the remains of the French peacekeeper had been killed by a soldier's grenade after it had exploded.

EUFOR is expected to investigate the circumstances that led to the clash.
