Gambia’s electoral chief fined

afrol News, 19 March - A regional court has found the former Gambian Chief Electoral Officer of guilty of forgery. Kawsu Ceesay was ordered to pay US $2,000, or in default goes to jail for thee months.

Mr Ceesay was dragged to court last year by the state after he had been accused of faking the signatures of the former Chairman of Independent Electoral Commission, Ndondi Njie for the purchase of electoral materials.

Mr Njie had denied knowmedge of a transaction involving a foreign company, let alone signed the invoices to that effect. A handwriting expert also proved that the signatures had been forged, although he did not say who must committed the crime.

The court blamed the defence for its failure to defend the case, describing its witness as “incredible.”

The presiding magistrate, Sainabou Wadda-Ceesay said her court was convinced with the prosecution evidence that Mr Ceesay had faked the document.

Mr Ceesay’s attorney pleaded to the court to temper justice with mercy, considering the fact that his client is a family member and first offender.
