Mauritania hailed for cutting ties with Israel

afrol News, 26 January - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad hailed Mauritania decision to cut ties with Israel, saying the north African state has set a positive example for Arab countries.

President Ahmadinejad said decision made by Mauritania's President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz should be set as a role model for other states.

"The Zionists are angry over these actions as they want to project that they have normal relations with the Islamic world," the Iranian said.

Israel shut down its embassy in Nouakchott following Mauritania's decision in January 2009 to suspend diplomatic ties with the Jewish state a decade after they were launched.

During his talks with Ahmadinejad, Ould Abdel Aziz, meanwhile, said that his country was "fully ready to cooperate with Tehran on regional and international levels

Mauritania was one of only three Arab nations that had formal diplomatic ties with Israel, apart from Egypt and Jordan.
