SA’s consumer price increased for January

afrol News, 25 February - The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in South Africa had seen a marginally rise to 6.2 percent in January, according to the government agency, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA).

In its announcement made yesterday, Stats SA said on average, the prices had increased by 0.3 percent between December 2009 and January 2010.

The CPI figure in December was reported to be at 6.3 percent. The agency also pointed out that this figure was still falling outside the inflation target.

Stats SA further pointed out that in January the food and non-alcoholic beverages index increased by 0.7 percent between December 2009 and January 2010 while the transport annual rate increased to 6.2 percent in January from 3.4 percent in December 2009.

The national bureau also said the monthly index decreased by 0.4 percent between December 2009 and January 2010. It explained that the decrease was mainly due to a decrease in the price of petrol.
