Regional electricity agreement to be signed in Maputo

afrol.com, 15 August  - South African Minister of Minerals and Energy, Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka will be in Maputo, Mozambique tomorrow, on Wednesday, 16 August 2000, to sign an international agreement with regard to Electricity Interconnector. The agreement is between South Africa and the neighbouring countries of Mozambique and Swaziland.

MOTRACO, a company formed by Eskom, Electricidade de Mozambique (EdM) and Swaziland Electricity Board (SEB) is to construct an electricity transmission line between South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland in order to transmit electricity to MOZAL, an aluminum smelter in Mozambique.

The purpose of the agreement is to establish a Joint Commission and to foster good relationships between the three governments with reference to MOTRACO. The agreement specifically seeks to provide for: Co-operation between the parties to facilitate the implementation of the project; The rights and obligations of the parties; and The establishment of a Joint Commission between the parties.

The public ceremony will take place at 10:15 am, on 16 August 2000 at Polana Hotel in Maputo.
