Misanet.com / The Namibian, 21 December - The issue of homosexuality was again raised at a public meeting addressed by Namibian Home Affairs Minister Jerry Ekandjo at the weekend, but this time the hardline views were not expressed by Ekandjo. The Minister received support for his homophobic stance from some members of those who turned out for the meeting in the Namibian Katutura East constituency. One woman even managed to link the presence of gays and lesbians in Namibia to the death of cattle. "There is no way we can allow gay and homosexuals relationships to continue in this country we have fought for. Even the cattle are dying because of their ungodly practices," the woman said. Another woman also felt homosexuality was not acceptable in Namibia, saying: "Just imagine your daughter or son brings his or her girlfriend and boyfriend of the same sex to your house and you have to relate the story to your other children or your neighbours." - You will become the laughing stock of the community, she said. "They will simply isolate you and you will become a total outcast. There is actually nothing like constitutional rights in this regard." Another woman put forward a different theory. "There is nothing like homosexuality and lesbianism really. In fact, it was started by people who just want to make quick money with the aim to destroy the excellent image Namibia has built since Independence." - These gays and lesbians first used to pay for others to sleep with them, she continued. "Now they are paid if one should want to sleep with them. What a disgrace what a shame. They just want to make money out of other people," the woman said forcefully while beating her chest. The comments were offered during a period in the meeting when residents could raise their concerns. The gathering was supposed to discuss the issues of crime and security. By Max Hamata, The Namibian
