Ibbo Daddy Abdoulaye, Nigerien journalist, has created Niger's first independent daily newspaper, interested in advancing democracy and a free press in Niger. NOTE: Daddy seems to be offline - not updated since June 1999.

Kakaki is a is a weekly independent online newspaper with a lot of information, news and opinions about Niger, and maintains a pro-democracy editorial policy. Recommended.

Le Républicain is a news weekly website about only about Niger. Extensive articles, but only in French. 

Les Internautes du Ténéré is a Nigerien friends' group, which offers some information about culture, sports, works...and total independence. Only in French.

The delegation of Niger at UNESCO has a website with a Nigerien news services, links and about Niger Cultural World heritage. In English.

 

Press reporting about Niger

AFP - Niger (French news agency) is probably the most regular provider of news from Niger, with several articles a week. All in French but still recommended

Africa Confidential is a bisemanal journal on Africa. They let you enter their database on Niger of past headlines, which has some basic facts and news about Niger.

AllAfrica (former AfricaNews) is a commercial network handling the distribution of reporting from more than 40 African news organizations and provides daily news from the entire African continent. You can also go directly to their Niger page, listing the latest news stories.

IRIN (Integrated Regional Information Network) is a UN humanitarian information unit, covering news from all Africa. You can also go directly into their Niger archive, where articles from the last months about Niger figure.

The Independent is an excellent British newspaper with a wide international coverage. You might want to go directly to their Africa page, where the latest articles about the continent are listed.

The International Herald Tribune is a daily newspaper edited in Paris with a focus on news from all over the world. Published with The New York Times & The Washington Post. 

The New York Times is one of the most important US newspapers, having a relatively good international coverage, including an Africa page. Most international articles, however, are by AP or Reuters.

The Washington Post is a prestigious US newspaper with an ample international coverage. You might want to go directly to their Africa page or Niger page, were the last articles from WP are listed.

Times Internet Edition (UK) is the internet edition of the world's oldest daily newspaper. The sister paper, the Sunday Times Internet Edition has its own website. Relatively good international coverage.

Niger Economic Development and Indicators is an annual NewAfrica country profile on their pages about African economy. They use the IMF as their primary source, which should guarantee for their quality.

Taimako ("La Caisse Populaire d'Epargne et de Crédit") is a non-lucrative institution, whose objective is the promotion of cooperative spirit, with special interest in the economic and social education. Information in French about some activities and results.

General Information/Read about Niger

The U.S. government has several informative, though subjective, pages about most countries in the world, including Niger, being regularly updated. Big resources are used to produce and maintain these pages. The CIA. annual Factbook 2000 is probably the best and most updated collection of data on the web. 
    Another informative site is the annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices Released by the U.S. State Department. Yet another, the travel warnings to each country of the world, by the same department.

The Ethnologue Database is a catalogue of more than 6,700 languages spoken in 228 countries. The Index organizes languages according to language families. 

The Spanish spoken website of the Basque publishing house Ikuska has pages on all African countries with relatively good statistical data and fuller information on ethnic groups.

Infoplease.com contains a page about Niger with basic data of the country: history, geography, etc.

NewAfrica Niger offers interesting information about Nigerien infrastructure, agriculture, business, environment, education, etc.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has a small, but interesting rapport about the situation of the press in Niger in 1997.

The most informative site about human rights in Niger is the annual Country Report on Human Rights Practices Released by the U.S. State Department. Big, elaborated report about the state of human rights in Niger.

Niger Human Rights Watch offers a presentation of abuses of human rights by the authoritarian regime of General Maïnassara. Not updated frequently, but with some interesting links.

In the annual World Press Freedom Review looks at the the state of the media in 168 countries, like Niger, documenting press freedom violations. 1999.

Lonely Planet, the famous publisher of budget travel guides, has pages on each African country. The U.S. State Department files travel information and warnings for all countries, world wide. Their annually updated pages contain a short description of the country and useful information about safety, crime rate, health services and insurance. Aimed at U.S. citizens, but useful for anybody. World Travel Guide's entry to Niger: This is a good, informative and well organised site.
