Western Sahara Searches

Here a list of sites were you can expect to find specific information about Western Sahara when you search their database on the word "Western Sahara":

UNIONS is the United Nations International Organizations Network Search. Here you can search within all the UN-system, including sub-organizations. Expect to find too much documents, reports, articles, etc. about Western Sahara.

ECA-search - (UN.org.) In the database of the Economic Commission for Africa you might find some country-specific information about development. They also are quite good on gender issues.

FAO-search - (UN-org.) Their database gives you lots of articles and reports about livestock and agriculture in Western Sahara. Tons of free information!

ILO-search - (UN-org.) Their database might find you some reports about working conditions in Western Sahara, although there is little African country-specific information.

Infonation is a UN statistics service. Choose country specific data from their huge and updated database. All countries are represented with data from the fields geography, economy, population and social indicators. You can compare data from up to seven countries. Excellent tool! 

UNDP-search - (UN-org.) You will find a solid amount of documents and reports about development in Western Sahara in their database.

UNESCO-search - (UN-org.) Their database contains loads of document related to education, science and culture and related items in Western Sahara.

WHO-search - (UN-org.) You'll find quit a few documents and reports about health issues in Western Sahara and the region doing a search in their database.

WTO-search - In the database of the World Trade Organization you'll find quit a few country-specific documents about trade, subsidies, development, etc. in Western Sahara. Write "Western Sahara" in the "Document Title" bar.

WoYaa! is a search engine in French and English with links to quite a few sites in French-speaking Africa. Not updated since 1998 (?) and many bad connections.

Yahoo-search - Yahoo helps you find websites related to Western Sahara, although you'll have no idea what you'll find clicking their links...

The Press in Western Sahara

The Sahara Press Service presents news from Western Sahara, mostly press releases from the Polisario.

Western Sahara Amateur Radio (Radioafición en la Republica Arabe Sahraui Democratica) is the official radio broadcasting of the Sahrawi Republic (based in Spain, Spanish and Arabic). Links to several radio and TV stations.

Western Sahara Weekly News is a news service published by the Polisario, in French and English. It offers short articles about the principal news of the passed week.

Westsahara is a weekly magazine from Germany with articles about Western Sahara in German. There are also links to news articles about Sahara in English, Spanish and Swedish.

 

Press reporting about Western Sahara

Africa Confidential is a bisemanal journal on Africa. They let you enter their database on Western Sahara of past headlines, which has some basic facts and news about Western Sahara

Africa News Online is an electronic network handling the distribution of reporting from more than 40 African news organizations and provides a showcase for journalism from across the African continent. You can also go directly to their Western Sahara page, listing the latest news stories. Recommended.

IRIN (Integrated Regional Information Network) is a UN humanitarian information unit, covering news from all Africa. You can also go directly into their Western Sahara archive, where articles from the last months about Western Sahara figure. 

One World News Service is an international news service with a special page for Western Sahara. In English, but not too regularly updated.

PANA (PanAfrican News Agency) has an expanding pool of correspondents continent wide and partnerships with 48 national news agencies and the largest news-gathering operation in Africa. No country pages, but daily updated news from all over Africa.

Weather.com  has a page about the weather in Western Sahara.

Le Monde, the leading French newspaper, has an ample international coverage (all in French). You can also go directly to their Africa page.

The Africa and Middle East site of the BBC World Services offers updated news, articles and other media services on Africa.

The Financial Times is one of the world's leading business newspapers with a global outlook. You can also go directly to their Middle East and Africa page.

The Independent is an excellent British newspaper with a wide international coverage. You might want to go directly to their Africa page, where the latest articles about the continent are listed.

The International Herald Tribune is a daily newspaper edited in Paris with a focus on news from all over the world. Published with The New York Times & The Washington Post. 

The New York Times is one of the most important US newspapers, having a relatively good international coverage, including an Africa page. Most international articles, however, are by AP or Reuters.

The Washington Post is a prestigious US newspaper with an ample international coverage. You might want to go directly to their Africa page or Western Sahara page, were the last articles from WP are listed.

Times Internet Edition (UK) is the internet edition of the world's oldest daily newspaper. The sister paper, the Sunday Times Internet Edition has its own website. Relatively good international coverage.

Africa Online Western Sahara offers services like e-mail, chat, newsgroups. A lot of news too, and only in English.

L'Afrique sur Internet is a website in French about everything what's happening on Internet in francophone Africa. List of links, forums, etc.

NewAfrica has chats, besides offering lots of other services.

 

 


Government Offices

Embassy of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic at New Dehli, India. Site is not too updated (maybe because India withdraw its recognition of the Saharawi Republic in 2000). 

El Sáhara en el Corazón (pagina de la delegación del Frente Polisario en España) is the official site of the POLISARIO Front delegation to Spain. Very informative site, but all in Spanish. Also features a list of Sahrawi embassies throughout the world.

MINURSO is the UN Mission the the Referendum in Western Sahara. Following the agreement between the Government of Morocco and the Frente POLISARIO, MINURSO was deployed in September 1991 to monitor the ceasefire and to organize and conduct a referendum. Site gives you access to the wealth of UN documents on Sahara.

Museo nacional del Pueblo Saharaui (Natoinal Museum of the Sahrawian People) presents the prehistory, history, cultures and physical geography of Western Sahara. All in Spanish, but quite impessing. 

OneWorld - Western Sahara has a lot of background information on Sahara in history and Sahara today. Includes special features on schooling, refugee camps and children's drawings. 

 

 

Economy

Mbendi Consultants' country profile on Western Sahara concentrates on economical issues. Statistics on communications and information technology, etc.

Planet Business-Western Sahara offers interesting data of the country's economic situation for importers, exporters, distributors and traders.

NewAfrica-Environment offers interesting information about the environment in Africa, among other subjects, and sometimes news about the environment in Western Sahara. 

General Information/Read about Western Sahara

The U.S. government has several informative, though subjective, pages about most countries in the world, including Western Sahara, being regularly updated. Big resources are used to produce and maintain these pages. The CIA Factbook 2000 is probably the best and most updated collection of data on the web. 
   Another informative site is the annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices Released by the U.S. State Department. 

The Spanish spoken website of the Basque publishing house Ikuska has pages on all African countries with relatively good statistical data and fuller information on ethnic groups.

Infoplease.com contains a page about Western Sahara with basic data of the country: history, geography, etc.

TIRISNET is supposed to be a web site made by the Sahrawi people in the refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria. It is recommended everywhere, but we've never been able to open it, so it might be down.

Human Rights

The most informative site about human rights in Western Sahara is the annual Country Report on Human Rights Practices Released by the U.S. State Department. Big, elaborated report about the state of human rights in Western Sahara.

 

Organisations

Saharawi Women is a web site by the National Union of Saharawi Women, in close contact to the POLISARIO. Site in English, French and Spanish. Quite informative. 

 

Politics

ARSO (Association de soutien à un référendum libre et régulier au Sahara Occidental) is channeling political information from the POLISARIO and sister organisations. Best site to keep updated on Sahara politics. Site in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. 

The most informative site about human rights in Western Sahara is the annual Country Report on Human Rights Practices Released by the U.S. State Department. Big, elaborated report about the state of human rights in Western Sahara.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has country pages for most African countries, describing the refugee situation. Page contains annually updated texts and statistics about refugees living in the country and internally displaced. There is no page on Western Sahara, but the Algeria page informs about the 165,000 Saharawi refugees living in four camps in the Tindouf area.

In Afrique francophone, only in French, you'll find links to some sites in francophone countries and francophone Africa in general. 

The Index on Africa' Western Sahara page includes various links. The index is created by The Norwegian Council for Africa, with the aim to strengthen the knowledge of Africa and African affairs. Their main page also has news and there are links to all countries on the continent.

Western Sahara Update is not too updated in its news coverage, but has a huge collection of historical papers and documents, relevant to the conflict with Morocco. Many links.

Sports

Sahara Marathon is the web site of the organisers of the international marathon around the Sahrawi refugee camps in the Tindouf area (Algeria) in support of the refugees. Informative site in various languages, also English. 

 

Telecom/Internet Services

Network Startup Resource Center Western Sahara Page contains information about telecommunications, internet services and networking in Western Sahara.

 

 

Travel

Lonely Planet, the famous publisher of budget travel guides, has pages on each African country. On their Western Sahara Page you'll find country background information and facts (overviews) for the traveler (money & costs, when to go, attractions, activities, getting there, getting around, etc.), if there's not a travel warning. Detailed facts only in the guide books.

Las Mujeres Saharauis is a Spanish organization with some long features about the situation of the Sahrawian women, culture, traditions, etc. Only in Spanish.
