UNIONS is the United Nations International Organizations Network Search. Here you can search within all the UN-system, including sub-organizations. Expect to find too much documents, reports, articles, etc. about African culture. You should try to narrow your search with words like the name of a country or "cinema".

UNESCO-search - (UN-org.) Their database contains loads of document related to education, science and culture and related items in all the world. You should enter the name of a country, region, or any specification you are looking for (like "cinema") to narrow your search results.

Africa Net is a Dutch site with a lot information about art, music, theatre, photography, etc. It doesn't have an English version.

African Contemporary Art is a Parisian magazine by Revue Noire in English and French versions. Good design and articles about books, music, films and contemporary African culture in general.

African Cultures is a portal web site dedicated only to African culture. Good structure and easy to find information.

AllAfrica - Arts & Entertainment is the culture page of AllAfrica (former AfricaNews), with daily updated news from all the continent.

Djembe Online is the Scandinavian forum for world art, world music, world culture. Articles are in English and Danish. The magazine is produced through volunteer work. The Danish Association for Promotion of African Music, Drama & Art, Couples Without Borders, DanTan and the Danish World Music Association use Djembe as a news bulletin for their members.

Bi-Okoto Drum & Dance Theatre is a non-profit cultural arts organization composed of highly talented artists. They offers information too about their repertoire and musician events.

OWHC, The Organization of World Heritage Cities has a website in English, Spanish and French with a list of the all cities and some information about it.

In the page of  The Centre for Cultural Policy Studies at University of Warwick you'll find information about conferences, debates, etc. about cultural policy.

ICOM, The International Council of Museums is the biggest international organization to museums and here offers links to a lot of international cultural organizations.

The International Network on Cultural Policy  is currently composed of 38 countries, and is evidence of a growing interest in preserving local and national cultures. Some African countries like Cameroon, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Morocco and south Africa are here.

ITI, The International Theatre Institute is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) that was founded  by UNESCO and the international theatre community. The ITI has information about  national centres in approximately 90 countries. A lot of them are African countries.

OUA, The Organization of African Unity.

UNESCO, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations, has a very good web site with a interesting page about African Culture Policy. Recommended!

Webster's World of Cultural Democracy has a page about Cultural Policy to find some information of a lot international cultural problems.

The Zimbabwe International Book Fair offers the largest and most diverse exhibition of books, magazines, journals, CD-ROM and publishing and printing technology and services in sub-Saharan Africa (including South Africa).

 

Gastronomy

Africa Online - Kenya has some good East African recipes.

The African Cookbook is one large documentation of fine African cooking. Here you will find a wide variety of traditional recipes.

In the food page of African Cultures you`ll find a lot information of African recipes. Well organizated, you will learn about some typical food from somes countries.

African Recipes Page from the University of Berkeley has a list of recipes.

African Recipes - The Congo Cookbook - has a large variety of African recipes, presented in a very delicate way for the American/European reader. This is a perfect place to start if you want to learn something about African cooking and read some interesting features asides. Well organized, and you can look up recipes by region or ingredient.

The Bergkelder, situated in Stellenbosch, is one of the most important winery in South Africa.

Boschendal is the largest state in South Africa and famous for their wines.

Clos Malverne tell us about Devon Valley, winery located in the heart of Stellenbosch, in South Africa and  is owned by Simon Pritchard who produced his first wine in 1988. The winery has a reputation for well structured, deeply colored and intensely varietal Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage.

The Food Museum  has a list of several food staples from tropical and temperate climates, with basic lexical information. Well organized, but basic information. They are still working on it, it may seem.

The Gambian Food & Dishes Page by NiiCa has some recipes to famous Gambian and West African dishes, including Chicken Yassa and Chicken and Beef Benachin.

"Goodcooking's Africa Pages has some typical African recipes.

The website on Klein Constantia wine tell us about its history. Klein Constantia estate, part of the farm that produced the Constantia wine prized by Europe's aristocracy in the 18th century, is considered one of South Africa's premier crus, its wines winning both local and international awards.

African Journals Online is a pilot project to promote African-published scholarly journals by means of the Internet. The site is managed by INASP and received initial funding from UNESCO. 

African Postcolonial Literature in English is a website with bibliographies and information about the literature and the history of the African English-spoken countries.

APNET, the African Publishers Network, promotes indigenous publishing in Africa. APNET brings together national publishers associations from 27 countries. APNET is a pan-African, non-profit making network with a Secretariat in Harare, Zimbabwe. Also a page in French.

The Electronic African Bookworm is developed by Hans Zell Publishing Consultants in Oxford as part of their Web site, this extensive links section has been designed specifically for use by the book professions in Africa, and by African writers and scholars, particularly those who may be new to the Web.

Femmes ecrivains et litterarure africaine is a good site about African female writers. They have interviews, unpublished texts in French, tittles, authors, bibliography, etc. English version.

In Great Epic Book you can found the best complete library about Africa. They maintain and constantly expand an excellent African reference library, currently in excess of 2500 volumes.

Research in African Literatures is published four times a year and is the premier journal of African literary studies worldwide. It serves as a stimulating vehicle in English for research on the oral and written literatures of Africa

Africaserver always offers new, special web-exhibitions of African artists, mainly paintings. You can also access older exhibitions. The site is recommended as the best one combining traditional art and modern, Internet technology to present it - all in an African perspective.

East African Music offers some musical information about only in Tanzania and Kenya. But they has too a page about African cinema. Not too much extended, but interesting facts.  

Gamton Records/Publishing is a Gambian World Music label located in Germany. It represents music groups like Senegambigha ( African Trance Percussion ). 

Jammin Reggae Archives is a good site with a lot of information and links with the reggae world.

Kayaga African Entertainmet is a site about dance, music, drama and storytelling from East Africa.

MiXite is a Dutch site with a lot of practical musical information, like bibliographies of musicians of all countries, agenda, etc. But they haven't a English version.

In National Songs of the World you can find a lot of lyrics to national anthems of African and other countries. 

RealWorld is an American record company, featuring artists from all over the world, including many African. Delicate website with online ordering.

Rumba-Kali or Africanhiphop.com is the organ of the non-profit organization Madunia in Holland and their site intents to serve those interested in hip hop and the cultures of Safica and of African origin. Their ample Sound Archives contain loads of mp3s and some videos with African music! Free sound!!

Shona Spirit offers some basic information about the mbira or thumb piano.

Mamady Keita is the site of one of the most important musicians in Guinea. It offers information about his biography, discography, music and instruments.

The Senegalese singer Pape Seck, which died in 1995,  has a website dedicated to him, written by Christina Roden.

In the page of Samite of Uganda you'll find information about music from East Africa, with biography, tour dates and instruments.

African Colours is an online resource for contemporary African Art. Smart design and a lot of content. Has special "Yellow Pages" on Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe, presenting selected artists. 

African Contemporary Art has a page with a list of artist (painting, sculpture, installation), but it doesn't have too much information and the connection  has some problems frequently. 

African Cultures has an art page with a lot articles about art from all Africa and some information about museums.

African Pottery Forming and Firing Techniques is an educational site, which offers photos with detailed descriptions of the forming and firing techniques used by African potters. 

Kheto Lualuali is a Mozambican artist with a virtual exhibition. You'll find here his biography and artworks in seven different phases. English, Portuguese, French

Tribal Eye (Oldbeads) is a large website presenting and selling beads, a showcase of African culture and handicraft. You can go directly to their comprahensive Africa Pages. Recommended.
