SHE Searches

Here a list of sites were you can expect to find specific information about women and gender when you search their database on a word like "allocation" or the name of a country. You should try to narrow your search, and preferably use narrow categories.

UNIONS is the United Nations International Organizations Network Search. Here you can search within all the UN-system, including sub-organizations. Expect to find too much documents, reports, articles, etc. about women in Africa.

ECA-search - (UN.org.) In the database of the Economic Commission for Africa you might find some country-specific information about development. They also are quit good on gender issues.

FAO-search - (UN-org.) Their database gives you lots of articles and reports about livestock and agriculture in women in Africa. Tons of free information!

ILO-search - (UN-org.) Their database might find you some reports about working conditions in women in Africa, although there is little African country-specific information.

UNDP-search - (UN-org.) You will find a solid amount of documents and reports about development and women in Africa in their database.

UNESCO-search - (UN-org.) Their database contains loads of document related to education, science and culture and related items in women in Africa.

WHO-search - (UN-org.) You'll find quit a few documents and reports about health issues in women in Africa and the region doing a search in their database.

WTO-search - In the database of the World Trade Organization you'll find quit a few country-specific documents about trade, subsidies, development, etc. in women in Africa. Write "Women" in the "Document Title" bar.

Yahoo-search - Yahoo helps you find websites related to women in Africa, although you'll have no idea what you'll find clicking their links...


Media

Here, you'll find links to international press, newspapers and news agencies regularly writing about gender issues in general. 

 

African Media

afrol - Women aims at providing near daily news articles relevant to African women and gender issues. Service was launched Autumn 2000, and has contributors from all over Africa.

Agenda is a feminist project in South Africa. It is committed to giving women a forum, a voice and skills to articulate their needs and interests towards transforming unequal gender relations. Well-done site! Recommended.

AllAfrica.com is a commercial network reporting from all over Africa. Their Women & Gender Page is an updated listing of their latest gender relevant news about women and feminism in Africa.

East African Media Women's Association (EAMWA) launched a web site o 8 March 2001, with news and other resources relevant to African women journalists. EAMWA also attempts to empower women journalists through professional education and training.

FamAfrique is a Dakar-based for and about women in Francophone Africa. It figures regular news (in French) and is one of the main resources on African women and gender issues. It also has two electronic information services one can subscribe to. Recommended. 

Marocco Femenin is a magazine with news, features, etc. in French, but is not frequently updated. It also offers information about the Moroccan integration plan for women.

 

International press

Elle is the classic women's magazine on fashion, beauty and lifestyle. The Internet edition doesn't stand back for the paper edition.

Global Feminist Daily News Wire features regularly updated gender news from the website of the Feminist Majority Foundation. Usually much from Africa. Feminist outlook!

Her Health Online is an American Internet magazine dedicated to women's health topics. Interesting and updated, though aiming at an American audience.

Women's International Net (WIN) is "an electronic magazine devoted to three purposes: furthering knowledge of women's issues worldwide, bringing together women from all over the world for dialogue and greater mutual understanding, and tapping new sources of talent in writing and enabling women from different countries to express their views and situations."

Gender Organizations

ABANTU is an African non-governmental organisation  for the purpose of harnessing resources to benefit of African people. 

Agenda is a feminist project in South Africa. It is committed to giving women a forum, a voice and skills to articulate their needs and interests towards transforming unequal gender relations. Well-done site!

The Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW), is part of the UN Secretariat. The DAW advocates the improvement of the status of the women of the world and the achievement of their equality with men. It aims to ensure the participation of women as equal partners with men in all aspects of human endeavour. Informative site.

East African Media Women's Association (EAMWA) launched a web site o 8 March 2001, with news and other resources relevant to African women journalists. EAMWA also attempts to empower women journalists through professional education and training.

Empowering Women is a programme by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). It's connected to The Inter-African Committee (IAC) on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children. The site lists a lot of links to organisations and sites related to women's economic development.

Equality now is a organization that works for the defense of the women's rights. It has special information about some African countries, rapports, links and data about marriage, laws, health, etc. In English, Spanish, French and Arabic.

Global Fund for Woman is an organisation, which provides flexible, timely grants to women's groups around the world striving to improve women's human rights. Their site gives more information.

Rising Daughters Aware (formerly the Female Genital Mutilation Network), provides free information and services for FGM affected women, their physicians, other health care providers, social workers, counselors and attorneys. US-based, but very informative site about FGM. Links.

Sisterhood Is Global Institute (SIGI) is dedicated to the support and promotion of women's rights at all levels. With a network of more than 1300 individuals and organizations in 70 countries, SIGI works for empowering women and human rights education. The site informs about activities and offers newsletters and a detailed list of publications. Links.

The International Women's Democracy Center is dedicated to strengthen women's global leadership through training, education, research and networking in all facets of democracy. The site informs about the organisations programmes and has some links.

UNIFEM is the UN Development Fund for Women, working for women's empowerment and gender equality. UNIFEM is also the arranger of the famous Beijing and Beijing +5 conferences, amongst many more. Their site is informative, with access to lots of documents and news concerning gender in an international perspective. A place you should have dropped by...

Women and Law in Southern Africa, WLSA,  is an action oriented research organization in seven countries of Southern Africa: Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In this page you''ll find an introduction about its activities and programs.  

Women's International League for Peace and Freedom is an international organisation working for peace, women's rights, sustainable development and ...  you name it.

WomenWatch is a UN programme working for the advancement and empowerment of women worldwide. WomenWatch is a joint initiative of DAW, UNIFEM and INSTRAW. The site keeps you updated on gender relevant news from the UN, conferences held (Beijing +5, etc.) and is a good starting point to find other links and find out what's up.

2000 World March of Women is a special site about the international women march on the 17th October. It offers all details about its objectives, links to different national women organizations and more.

FamAfrique is a Dakar-based for and about women in Francophone Africa. It figures regular news (in French) and is one of the main resources on African women and gender issues. It also has two electronic information services one can subscribe to.

The Feminist Majority Foundation is a comprehensive website about feminism in the American tradition. It's also a start page, and keeps you updated in the world of feminism. Many links, events, research, art, sports, etc. 

The FGM Education and Networking Project. About female genital mutilation (FGM). Network with many links, articles, background information, reference material, bibliography and including country reports which include the status of FGM in those countries.

Botswana
Women and Law in Southern Africa, WLSA,  is an action oriented research organization in seven countries of Southern Africa: Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In this page you''ll find an introduction about its activities and programs.  

Burkina Faso
RECIF is a feminist non governmental organization in Burkina Faso with some interesting information about the situation in the country. French. 

Burundi
The main objectives of the Burundi Women Journalists Association, BWJA, are promoting women’s rights, the freedom of the expression and the liberty of the press. Site gives short introduction.

Cameroon
ASAFE ( Association pour le Soutien et l'Appui à la Femme Entrepreneur ) is based in Douala, Cameroon, where it has been providing business development services to micro and small entreprises (MSE) run by women entrepreneurs in the region ( Cameroon, Guinea, Benin, Tchad and Togo) since 1989. French and English.

Marche Mondiale des femmes en l'an 2000
is the website about the program of the women march in the 2000 year in Cameroon. Its includes some additional information. French. 

OFSAD is the "Organisation des Femmes pour la Sécurité Alimentaire et le Développement du Cameroun", founded in 1992 and with some information about its objectives. French.

Egypt
The Legal Research and Resource Center for Human Rights (LRRC) in Cairo, Egypt, offers reports and data about human rights and women's rights. English.

Ethiopia
The Ethiopian Media Women Association (EMWA) is a non-profit non-partisan professional association, and is active as a forum to serve and enhance the needs of media women. Site gives short introduction.

Kenya
The Association of Media Women in Kenya, AMWIK, is a media organisation whose overall concern is to promote and represent the interests of women in the media. Site gives short introduction.

Lesotho
Women and Law in Southern Africa, WLSA,  is an action oriented research organization in seven countries of Southern Africa: Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In this page you''ll find an introduction about its activities and programs.  

Libya
Women's Organizations is a list with the addresses and contacts of the principal women's organizations in Libya. English.

Malawi
The Malawi Media Women's Association, MAMWA, aims at promoting women in the media, carrying out activities in the areas of member training programmes and career guidance for girls in school. Site gives basic introduction.

Morocco
GAREF is the "Groupe Académique de Recherches et d'Etudes Féminines", with some information  about its activities and data about other international centers about women studies. In French. 

La Femme Marocaine is a organization with a list of long articles and features in relation with the situation of the women in Morocco. Only French. 

Maroco Femenin is a magazine with news, features, etc. in French, but is not frequently updated. It offers information about the Moroccan integration plan for women.

Niger
CONIPRAT, Comité Nigérien sur les Pratiques Traditionnelles ayant effet sur la santé des femmes et des enfants, is the principal women's organization in Niger. It offers some basic information in French.

Nigeria 
BAOBAB for Women's Human Rights is the leading rights NGO in Nigeria, based in Lagos and doing a tremendous work. BAOBAB does not have a web site yet (although it has a domain, check it out), but can be reached by mail or by tel/fax +234 1 262-6267. 

Senegal
APROFES is the "Association pour la Promotion de la Femme Sénégalaise". In French, they offers updated information about theirs activities, programs, partners and more.

SYNFEV - Synergy Gender and Development - is an entity of ENDA Third World - Environment and Development of the Third World - a non-profit international organisation based in Dakar, Senegal. It offers some information, in French anf English, but is not frequently updated.

Tostan is a Senegalese NGO, supported by UNICEF, promoting innovative basic education program that emphasizes literacy, numeracy, improving life skills and family income, and encouraging women to participate in village decision making. Works actively against FGM in Senegal. Interesting site, in English.

South Africa

The African Gender Institute (Cape Town University) has a regularly updated site about its programs, objectives and interesting rapports. English.

The Commission on Gender Equality (CGE) was established in terms of South Africa's new constitution. The mission of the CGE is to promote gender equality and to advise and make recommendations to Parliament or any other legislature with regard to any laws or proposed legislation which affects gender equality and the status of women.

South African Women for Women is the website of this women organization with regularly updated information about its programs and awards. English.

Stop Women Abuse: Getting Help is a South African site that provides information on basic facts about women abuse, different organisations that work in the field of violence against women and the services they offer to help you.

Work Trauma is a South African site committed to dignity and respect at the workplace with help for targets of work trauma caused by bullying, abuse, harassment, discrimination and retrenchments. Research papers also available.

 

Swaziland

Tanzania 
Tanzania Gender Networking Programme (TGNP) is committed to facilitating social transformation leading to the creation of a vibrant Tanzanian society. It seeks to promote gender equality and social equity through the empowerment of women and other marginalised sections of the community.

The Tanzania Media Women’s Association, TAMWA, is committed to the objective of empowering female journalists and has been able to raise awareness and advocate on many issues concerning the rights of women and children. Site gives short introduction.

Tunisia
Tunisia.com offers a special page about the women's right in the country, with information about laws and some more. In French.

Uganda
The Uganda Media Women's Association (UMWA) has been set up as a forum to raise women issues in the media and to project a positive image of women in the media. Site gives short introduction.

Women of Uganda Network (Wougnet) offers a lot of information in English about women in Uganda: organizations, economy, health, human rights, studies and more. Also offers a free mailing list/newsletter. 

Western Sahara
Las Mujeres Saharauis is a Spanish organization with some long features about the situation of the Sahrawian women, culture, traditions, etc. Only in Spanish. 

Zambia

The African Gender Institute (Cape Town University) has a regularly updated site about its programs, objectives and interesting rapports. English.

 

AAWS is the Association of African Women Scholars, an international organization to promote the education in the African women.

 

The Center for Global Education is recognized for its work on experimental education for North Americans interested in global gender issues. The site lists both short term international travel seminars and study abroad programs for undergraduate students.

 

FAWE is the Forum for African Women Educationalists, an international organization in connection with some relevant institutions in the African education.

The Global Reproductive Health Forum is run by the Harvard School of Public Health. It is an excellent internet source for information on reproductive technology, rights, health and gender.

The International Association for Feminist Economics is an organisation which is dedicated to sharing resources and fostering dialogue among economists and others globally, to advancing feminist inquiry into economic issues. It also promotes women's education within economy. The site give ample information on this.

Web page by "Religious Tolerance" about female and intersexual genital mutilation in North America. Some basic information, legal information, references and links.

On the Female Circumcision Issues Page, the unofficial text of the bill to prohibit female genital mutilation in the USA (FGM), H.R. 3247 by Pat Schroeder is presented. No links.

Female Circumcision: Clitorectomy and Infibulations is a page with some texts, a bibliography and useful links on FGM. 

Rising Daughters Aware. Based in Oakland, California, the RDA provides free information and services for FGM affected women in the USA. The RDA is dedicated to support sensitive, qualified medical and advocacy assistance for women who are seeking to avoid, or have already been subjected to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Many links and articles. Recommended!

African Men United Against Female Circumcision (AMUAFC). The page lists the organization's purposes. No links, but a mail address.

Forward is a British foundation for women's health. It aims at promoting good reproductive health among African women and their children in the UK and Africa, and is the leading NGO in the UK working to eliminate female genital mutilation. Some texts, bibliography, links. ForwardUSA is the American sister organization.

The Feminist Majority Foundation hosts an Index of Feminist News Stories on Female Genital Mutilation (articles from their own archives). Global orientation, also about Africa.

Yahoo hosts a list of links about female genital mutilation. Global outlook.

Her Health Online is an American Internet magazine dedicated to women's health topics. Interesting and updated, though aiming at an American audience.

The Global Reproductive Health Forum is run by the Harvard School of Public Health. It is an excellent internet source for information on reproductive technology, rights, health and gender.

 

 

Human Rights

Women's rights in Africa is a site from Africa Policy Information Center, which offers some information, documents and links to other related sites.

Womens Human Rights offers you information on the international situation of the women. In English, Spanish and French.

Lifestyle

Elle is the classic women's magazine on fashion, beauty and lifestyle. The Internet edition doesn't stand back for the paper edition.

Style.Com is an Internet magazine on lifestyle, fashion and beauty, cooperating with Vogue US.

Vogue World, with links to the different national editions - an equally well known and recognized lifestyle magazine.

 

 

 

Mothering

Mothering Magazine is a print magazine with feature article and columns for Mothers about mothering. US outlook.

Safe Motherhood is the website of the Safe Motherhood Initiative, promoting women's ability to have a safe and healthy pregnancy and delivery. It is a global effort that aims to reduce deaths and illnesses among women and infants, especially in developing countries. Informative site. Global outlook.

 

 

Politics

The Center for Women's Global Leadership seeks to develop an understanding of the ways in which gender affects power and public policy. The CWGL wants to use Beijing as a springboard for increasing awareness about the issue of gender and human rights. Informative site.

The site of the International Directory of Women's Political Leadership contains an international directory on women leaders and organizations around the world. 

 

Sexual abuse / Rape

Speak Out is a South African resource site for rape survivors. Contains emergency rape information, stories of other survivors, facts and myths about rape, information about legal services and medical care, and more.

Stop Women Abuse: Getting Help is a South African site that provides information on basic facts about women abuse, different organisations that work in the field of violence against women and the services they offer to help you.

Work Trauma is a South African site committed to dignity and respect at the workplace with help for targets of work trauma caused by bullying, abuse, harassment, discrimination and retrenchments. Research papers also available.

 

 

Sexuality

The Women's Sexuality Center, located in Santa Barbara California offers courses workshops and private trainings designed to educate nurture and support. Director Pamela Madison is also very much involved in helping FGM victims recovering their sexuality.
