ADB to finance the electrification of 17 rural centres
afrol.com, 28 June - The Board of Directors of the African Development Fund (ADF) approved today a loan of US$ 6.33
million to finance the electrification of 17 rural centres project in Benin.
The objective of the project is to improve the living conditions of the rural population as well as the country’s electrification rate. It particularly seeks to electrify 17 rural centres and supply almost 7000 households with electric power by 2005. The project will also contribute to the promotion and development of economic activities in rural areas.
The project will involve the extension of the 20 kV medium voltage (MV) grid with the construction of 204.4 km of new three phase overhead lines as well as the construction of 52.2 km of low voltage (LV) and 25.3 km of mixed lines. It will also involve 7000 single- phase social connections of rural housing and the installation of 400 street lights as well as the improvement of the operation and management of MV and LV customers .
The loan will be used to finance the entire foreign exchange and part of the local currency costs of the project whose total cost is estimated at UA 6.49 million- approximately US $ 8.56 million. It is repayable over 50 years including a 10-year grace period.
Bank Group operations in Benin started in 1972. To date, the Group has committed a total of US$ 398.75 million on 53 operations. Of this amount, about US$ 285.08 million have been disbursed.
