US backs ousted Mauritania regime

afrol News, 3 September - The United States has thrown its support behind the ousted Mauritanian regime of former president Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi and prime minister Yahya Ould Ahmed Waghf.

In a statement released through its embassy in the capital Nouakchott, the United States said it does not recognise the legitimacy of the "so-called government announced by the high council of state."

The Washington government said it will continue to recognise the ousted regime as the legitimate government of Mauritania.

Washington officials are contemplating imposing financial sanctions and travel restrictions on indidivuals for their participation in "an illegal and non-democratic government."

General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, the former head of presidential guards led renegade soldiers to dislodge Mauritania's democratically elected government from power on 6 August.

The military junta has been under intense international pressure to restore constitutional democratic rule, with the African Union suspending the West African nation from participating in its activities.
