Mauritania to have new SA funded fish cannery

afrol News, 2 February - The Salena Fishing Limited, a South African based company has announced an investment of US$ 120 million in Mauritania for the building a fish cannery.

According to official sources in the Mauritanian capital, the factory building in Nouakchott is due to an agreement signed last weekend in the South African city of Pretoria, between the Ministers of Fisheries of the two countries.

Under the agreement, the sources said, the factory will have a floating platform for the berthing of ships and various industrial units for the storage and manufacturing of fish meal and oils.

The Minister of Fisheries of Mauritania, Ould Ely Hassena also confirmed after signing the agreement, that it provides the establishment of a fish cannery in the Mauritanian capital, consisting of a dock to accommodate vessels and a series of industrial units for the conservation of fish and fish oils.

The minister also said that under the terms of the agreement it is stipulated that the new factory will employ 1,700 women in Mauritania.

The Mauritanian minister stressed that this agreement represents a qualitative leap in relations between Mauritania and South Africa and opens new horizons for the development of other projects in the economic field.
