afrol News partner media: Futuro Saharaui

Futuro Saharaui (FS) is the most incredible independent newspaper participating in the afrol News network. The irregular Saharawi publication is based in the Algerian desert refugee camps close to Tindouf, which are under the authority of the exiled (Polisario) government of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) under extremely difficult conditions. Not only does FS not have access to normal facilities (offices, Internet, paper, printing equipment, etc) - most must be done in Algiers - but they also struggle against SADR authorities, which do not provide press freedom legislation.

FS is the only independent media in Western Sahara - including the Moroccan-occupied territory and the refugee camps under SADR control. Editor Said Zarwal and his team have been met by exclusion from authorities and the large number of media associated to government. Lack of infrastructure aid has led to irregular publications and many quality problems, but Futuro Saharaui still is able to hit the streets in the camps and communicate with the outside world. For conscious advertisers, or NGOs and institutions wanting to reach others than Polisario cadres, FS is the natural place to place an ad.

afrol News first started cooperating with Futuro Saharaui in 2003. Since the Arabic language newspaper started publishing articles in Spanish in September 2006, it is also part of the network and afrol News distributes its copy. afrol News has also pledged to assist FS in raising funds for a press freedom project in Western Sahara, which aims at assuring the establishment and consolidation of an independent and critical press under the harsh conditions offered in the refugee camps. Potential agencies, NGOs or donors wanting more information or to cooperate should contact afrol News.
