- African anti-poverty activists have expressed disappointment at what they say it's a slow move towards millennium development goals, calling on African citizens to hold governments and leaders accountable.
In a statement today, anti-poverty activits gathered in Nairobi, however said action campaign held in 30 countries across the globe, on 17-19 October, was a successful reminder for all to re-focus on attaining set goals to end poverty by 2015.
"We are extremely pleased that millions of Africans decided to take action by getting involved in this campaign," Pana quoted Tajudeen Abdul-Raheem, Deputy Director (Africa), of Nairobi-based UN Millennium Campaign.
He further said attention that anti-poverty campaign received across Africa was proof that chronic poverty can be ended in this continent if there is commitment, political will and accountability by the African leaders.
Media report also said organisers of campaign said today that efforts to sensitise African citizens on the need to hold their various governments accountable on pledges of halving poverty received highest-ever response during three-day advocacy period.
'Stand up Campaign' mobilised nearly 24 million people, to participate at various events in 30 countries across the globe, according to reports.
Campaign organisers were also said to have stated that mass mobilisation had the power to change course of history and advocate for more action if MDGs are to be achieved in Africa.
MDGs are a set of achievable development targets, which all member states of UN have committed to meet by 2015.
Gathering in Kenya today was part of celebration and reflection on achievements made by 'Stand up Campaign', which has been dubbed a great success and record makers.
